Senior Audiologist • 10/15/2026

You pay your mediclaim premium every year, so it’s fair to expect some help when the audiologist quotes ₹80,000 for a pair of hearing aids. Most people find out at the billing desk that there isn’t any.
Short answer: usually not. But “usually” leaves room, and a few routes do work. Here’s how it actually plays out in India.

Does Health Insurance Cover Hearing Aids in India?
In most cases, no. Standard individual and family floater policies pay for hospital stays, surgery and day-care procedures. A hearing aid is something you buy and wear, not something you’re admitted for, so the claim has nothing to attach to.
The industry’s own paperwork says the same. The list of non-payable items that insurers use when settling hospital bills includes “cost of spectacles, contact lenses, hearing aids etc.” as not payable. Read that line once and you know where hearing aids stand.
What Is Covered, and What Isn’t?
Coverage depends heavily on who is paying the premium and what the policy says. This table is a rough guide, not a promise. Your policy wording is what counts.
| Individual mediclaim policy | Usually not covered. Hearing aids sit in the same bucket as spectacles. |
| Employer / group policy | Sometimes. A few plans reimburse a fixed amount; check your policy document or ask HR. |
| Hospitalisation for an accident or illness | Occasionally, if the hearing device is part of treatment and approved in advance. |
| Cochlear implant surgery | Some comprehensive plans cover it, often with sub-limits and waiting periods. |
| CGHS (Central Government) | Yes, up to a ceiling rate. See our CGHS guide for the current limits. |
| Batteries, servicing, accessories | Almost always excluded. |
Pre-approval matters wherever coverage exists. If you buy first and ask later, the claim is usually rejected.
Do Corporate or Group Health Policies Pay for Hearing Aids?
Occasionally. Some employer plans carry a small wellness or device benefit, often a capped amount you can claim once every few years. Many don’t.
Before you assume it’s a no, ask HR for the full benefits document and search it for “hearing”, “prosthetic” and “assistive device”. It takes five minutes.
Is a Cochlear Implant Covered by Insurance?
Sometimes, and it’s a very different conversation from hearing aids. A cochlear implant is a surgery, so it falls inside hospitalisation cover on some comprehensive plans. Even then, expect waiting periods, sub-limits and a demand for specialist documentation. The cost can run to several lakh rupees per ear, so a sub-limit can leave a big gap.
Speech therapy and device programming after the surgery are often outside the policy. Ask about those before you commit.
Can Central Government Employees Claim a Hearing Aid?
Yes. CGHS beneficiaries, pensioners and eligible dependents can claim hearing aids up to a ceiling rate, and the limits changed recently. The details, including how the per-ear and both-ears amounts work, are in our guide to CGHS hearing aid reimbursement. Get the prescription and paperwork in order before you buy.

How Can I Make Hearing Aids Affordable Without Insurance?
Prices vary a lot by brand and technology level. Our breakdown of what affects hearing aid cost shows where the money goes, and you can compare brand-wise numbers on the hearing aid price page. Insono also offers 0% EMI, so a pair doesn’t have to be paid for in one go.
A few practical moves: pick the technology level that matches your daily life instead of the top tier, look at rechargeable models if you’re tired of buying batteries, and use the 3-day trial before you commit. Our guide to choosing the right hearing aid walks through what to ask.
Which Brands Can I Compare at Insono?
Insono stocks Signia, Phonak, Widex, Oticon, Starkey and ReSound. Since insurance won’t narrow the choice for you, the free hearing test is where you work out what you actually need and what it costs.
Is It Worth Paying Out of Pocket for Hearing Aids?
For most people, yes, and sooner is cheaper than later. Untreated hearing loss doesn’t stay still, and the research on hearing loss and dementia is one more reason not to wait for a claim that was never going to come.
